Hi there, Just a very quick one today I wanted to give you a bit of information about Jasper’s all time favourite herb.
This herb took Jasper a while to discover but once he did he was absolutely hooked, he eats it everyday with out fail, in all the months i have been giving him herbs this is the one I can guarantee that he will always eat, even if he doesn’t want anything else.
Dena got it specially for him as it is supposed to be fantastic for skin conditions and since I have discovered that Catherine Bird highly recommends it for treatment of Sarcoids, Jasper certainly seems to think he needs it, so I would say certainly in our case it has been an important herb in his sarcoid treatment.
Burdock Root (Arctium lappa)
Grows in England, Europe and North America, you would probably recognise it for its sticky burr like seed heads that stick to absolutely anything.
Burdock is a very useful tissue cleanser and healer, helping the tissues remove any excess toxins, making it ideal for use in chronic inflammatory or infective disorders.
Due to its detoxing nature, it is important that burdock should be used alongside herbs that help with the removal of these toxins from the system, herbs such as nettle or clivers are ideal.
Burdock is an excellent digestive aid and has also been used in the treatment of arthritis and rheumatism. It is particularly useful for treating any blood disorders, liver and kidney function or toxic conditions which result in skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, sores, boils or dry scurfy skin. Burdock is also reputed to have anti-tumour activity.
The root can be used externally in a poultice to speed up the healing of wounds, sores, boils or any septic conditions.
Burdock has a mild diaphoretic action which assists in eliminating any build up of toxins via the skin and disperses excess nervous energy in a hot horse. It can be useful as a general detox.
Again information from Hilary Page Self & Catherine Bird, great books & well worth a read.
Until next time
With Love
Fiona & Jasper
